Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge

Located 20 miles  north of Brownsville, Laguna Atascosa N.W.R. is the last tiny area of the southern gulf coast preserved in its natural state. It is reputedly a bird watcher's paradise. Bayside Drive makes a loop through the park for cars and bicycles. I rode a bicycle there in March 2003.

The yucca were in full bloom.

Bayside Drive is  a narrow, one-way road with light traffic. This is one of the better paved sections--other parts are more like packed dirt.

This appears to be a view of the Gulf Of Mexico, but actually Padre Island provides a breakwater seven miles away (the body of water seen here  is called Laguna Madre).

This panaramic view includes  the sand dunes in the photo above.

This panaramic view shows wetlands on the left and Laguna Madre on the right.
