Appropriately, a tree stood over Smokey's final resting place. |
When  Smokey died after a long life at the National Zoo in Washington, he was returned to Capitan to be buried in the mountains where he was born. |
This is the plaque on the rock  above. |
The smaller, older Smokey Bear museum building featured Smokey artwork and offered  a variety of souvenirs for sale. |
The old museum building was a log cabin. In the foreground on the left one can see  how Smokey was discovered--clinging to a charred tree. |
