Very Large Array Photos, Part III

This monstrous transporter is used to move  the antennas along the double railroad tracks.

A nearby plaque described the transporters.

Here is a look down the tracks of one arm of the VLA.

This picture was taken looking the other way. A week is allowed to reconfigure the antennas, and they usually stay in the same position for a few months.

Back on US 60 headed for Datil, I stopped to look at another antenna that was close to the highway.

This time I got an especially good look at the 82-foot dish.

There was a railroad crossing on US 60 for one arm of the VLA. Notice the " VLA" on the gates across the tracks, as well as the other antennas in the distance. I imagined that antenna crossings were annoying to locals (since they move pretty slowly), but fascinating for someone just happening to pass through.
